The Old Absinthe House has a legacy following its every heartbeat”, this historic building was built in 1807. Originally the building was used as an importing firm, then converted to a “corner grocery “ of food, tobacco and fine Spanish liquor.

In 1874, mixologist, Cayetano Ferrer, created a drink consisting of Absinthe—the “Old Absinthe House Frappe”. The popularity of this venomous green concoction consequently resulted in the coffee house being renamed “Absinthe Room,” and thus a legend was born! (More History on the Old Absinthe House)

For almost 200 years the Old Absinthe House bar has been a staple of life in the Vieux Carré. Located on the corner of Rue Bourbon and Rue Bienville, the cooper-topped wooden bar captivates patrons as they sip their favorite beverages and the sights and sounds of the French Quarter trickle into this comfy tavern.

Over the years, the Old Absinthe House has flourished into one of New Orleans most prominent social scenes. Half the fun of this place is its delicious history, and the rumors and facts that intertwine the ideals of the Old Absinthe House. Sample the generous selections of fine malt scotches or sample some house specialties such as the “The Absinthe House Frappe” (now made with Herbsaint), an Old Fashion, an Absinthe Suissesse or the famous Ramos Gin Fizz.

Antique chandeliers, and jerseys and helmets of many famous football legends are suspended from the exposed cypress beams. Authentic marble fountains with brass faucets that were once used to drip cool water over sugar cubes into glasses of Absinthe align the bar that seats some 50 patrons at the rail. Calling cards adorn the walls of the Old Absinthe House and no visit is complete with out leaving your card on the wall with the millions of others who have given testimony to the Old Absinthe House’s motto “EVERYONE YOU HAVE KNOWN OR EVER WILL KNOW, EVENTUALLY ENDS UP AT THE OLD ABSINTHE HOUSE”
